Ratchet Chain Binders
Ratchet binders use a ratcheting mechanism to tension the chain. They feature a ratcheting handle and hooks on each end that work together to secure your load in conjunction with the appropriate transport chain.
Unlike lever or snap binders, ratchet load binders store very little energy in the handle, reducing the risk of recoiling and snapbacks for the operator. The one downside to this style is speed - it takes longer to both install and release these binders.
Choosing a Ratchet Load Binder
There are two main attributes to pay attention to when picking the right ratchet binder for your application: size and grade.

Ratchet Boomer Size
Size refers to the chain size the binder is compatible with. For example, this 1/4" ratchet chain binder should only be used with 1/4" chain.
If you notice a binder with more than one size listed, such as the 5/16" - 3/8" ratchet chain binder, this means it can be used with multiple chain sizes. This is generally true for just grade 70, but can also apply to grades 80 and 100.
Ratchet Chain Tensioner Grade
Most of our binders are designed to work with grade 70 transport chain, as that is the most common size in the trucking industry. Many are also compatible with grade 80, 100, and 120 tie down chain, but it varies by binder.
The most important thing to keep in mind here is the working load limit - when using a lower-grade ratchet binder with a higher-grade chain, the working load limit of the binder will probably be lower than that of the chain. Since a tie down system is only as strong as its weakest link, this will reduce the overall working load limit of the entire securement setup.
